Marketfield College students
learn the science
behind baking Hot Cross Buns.

In the latest bakery session, the passionate students used Zeelandia’s Exakt Zest and learned the kneading, piping, and glazing involved in baking Hot Cross Buns.

For the past three years, Zeelandia UK Limited, has worked with students from Marketfield College delivering classes where catering students can learn more about working in a professional food manufacturing environment.   
Marketfield College aims to provide education for students with moderate learning difficulties, with vocational programmes including woodwork, childcare, and last but not least, catering.  
 
In the latest session, the passionate students used Zeelandia’s Exakt Zest and learned the kneading, piping, and glazing involved in baking Hot Cross Buns. 
Students also took part in scientific experiments to understand how bread rises with the help of yeast, while also exploring some of the delicious bakery treats that use our Roma Cold custard range.  
 
Chris Halls, Learning Support Assistant at Marketfield College explained; “To get this level of experience in an NPD test kitchen and learn from the bakery experts at Zeelandia UK has been invaluable for the students. We have a kitchen in the college where students prepare brownies, cakes, and other baked goods for our café and other local community cafes, so they will be taking a lot away from them today.” 
 
Tyler, aged 17, is one of these students with a passion for baking and has already baked over 250 different types of bakery goods, not only on his course and in the café, but also spending his weekend baking with his mother!  
 
Tyler added; “Every time I bake, I put my heart and soul into it.” 
 
Andrew Taylor, New Product Development Manager at Zeelandia UK Limited, said; “It is a pleasure as always to have the students back and great to see their development, not only in the baking skills but understanding the processes behind baking. We look forward to our next session and also encourage any local bakers to consider work experience for these talented individuals.
